In June, South Korean officials approved the production of the first ever drug, a COVID-19 vaccination, using a new protein created by humans. The vaccine is based on a protein “nanoparticle” with a spherical shape that scientists developed over 10 years ago through a labor-intensive process of trial and error.
Now, a biochemist at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, claims in science that it can create such molecules in seconds rather than months because to enormous advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Such initiatives are a part of a larger scientific shift as life scientists adopt AI technologies like DeepMind’s protein structure prediction program AlphaFold. The most recent iteration of AlphaFold had predicted the structures of every protein known to science, DeepMind disclosed in July. And in recent months, the number of AI tools that can swiftly imagine entirely new proteins has increased dramatically. Some of these tools are based on AlphaFold. This has previously been a laborious endeavor with a high failure rate.
The majority of efforts are concentrated on developing methods for creating novel proteins that are unlike anything seen in nature, with little attention paid to the potential of these molecules. However, scientists would like to develop proteins that can do beneficial tasks, from cleaning up toxic waste to curing illnesses, and an increasing number of businesses are doing just that. The organizations DeepMind in London and Meta (previously Facebook) in Menlo Park, California are among those pursuing this objective.
