European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants

The ERC Starting Grants are part of the European Research Council (ERC) funding schemes, designed to support early-career researchers who are on the cusp of establishing their own independent research teams. Established by the European Commission, the ERC aims to promote high-quality research and innovation across Europe by providing competitive funding for groundbreaking and high-risk projects.

The purpose of the ERC Starting Grants is to help talented young researchers transition from being postdoctoral researchers to leading their own independent research projects. This grant is intended for researchers who are at a stage where they have already made significant contributions to their field but need support to launch their own research group and establish a sustainable research career. The grants provide financial support for up to five years, covering direct research costs, as well as equipment, and salaries for the research team.

The ERC Starting Grants are distinguished by their focus on scientific excellence and innovation. The grants are awarded based on the potential of the research proposal, the track record of the applicant, and the novelty of the research idea. The ERC’s mission is to encourage curiosity-driven research and to support researchers whose work could lead to groundbreaking discoveries and advancements.

By funding these early-career researchers, the ERC aims to stimulate a dynamic research environment across Europe, fostering talent, and enhancing the continent’s position as a leader in global research. The grant supports a broad range of scientific disciplines, including physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences, making it a versatile funding option for a wide array of research projects.

Qualification

To qualify for an ERC Starting Grant, applicants must be researchers who have completed their Ph.D. and have between 2 and 7 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of the application deadline. This time frame allows for a period of research experience following the completion of the doctoral degree. Candidates must demonstrate a strong track record of research achievements and potential, which includes publications, presentations, and other scholarly contributions. The research proposal submitted must be innovative and demonstrate the potential for significant advancements in the respective field. Applicants must be working in, or planning to move to, an institution in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country.

Experience

Eligible candidates for the ERC Starting Grants should possess a solid record of research accomplishments that reflect their ability to carry out independent and innovative research. This includes a proven track record of significant publications in peer-reviewed journals, successful project management, and contributions to their field of expertise. Experience in leading research initiatives or teams, even at a smaller scale, will strengthen the application. The grant is particularly suited for researchers who have demonstrated the capability to pursue ambitious and high-risk research projects that could lead to substantial scientific breakthroughs. Candidates should also be able to show their potential for establishing a research group and contributing to their field with originality and excellence.
